Flared pants (you know the kind we saw on the 'That 70's show' from the 90's) have officially made a come back. Or the Spring 2012 runways made it look like that. Now, while I did consider giving in right away, I did have my reservations. You see, I'm a full bodied Punjabi girl and buying clothes to flatter my body's shape is one of the things I learnt the hard way. So I wasn't ready to commit.

I went on a hunt, choosing, sorting, trying-on, rejecting, picking more, trying on some more, and rejecting it all.

Then I chanced upon this totally gorgeous pair. Snug in all the right areas (a.k.a the butt, and the thighs), perfectly structured, with a demure boot cut (not too wide, and not to small), very dark coloured, these jeans, are my new favourite!

Now when I bought these babies, I was asked a very pertinent question - Would I like to get my jeans shortened? Well!? Clueless, and ignorant, I let it pass knowing that if need be I could always put my scissors to good use. Later in the evening, Google led me to this. And since that article didn't make the choice for me either.. I must stay in my heels for now.

Worn here in a simple outfit for everyday errands. I did however feel the need to add a bit of bling - the necklace - and do up my hair differently, only to celebrate my pair of perfect blue jeans! Finally found it!

Hey there Goodlookins!! At the 'Goodlookin' blog, the belief is that inspiration is everywhere. So I'd like you to draw inspiration from the style of not one, but all the fashionistas out there!

I love to watch people on the streets of the city. A free lesson in the dos and don'ts of how to wear what you want to wear, and what not to wear!! It's quite something else, to see a mother with her little daughter, and realise how your sense of style is in-fact, inherited from your mum, or your grandmum.
To see how the one thing that has an effect on a man's style... is the woman on his arm.
Or an unabashed display of colour in an outfit, that challenges the grey winter, and shouts out to spring!
A hidden smile in the eyes of a woman, who's strutting around in a new pair of shoes, head held high.
A stranger who sits alone with his green tea, and reads his book, peering out the cafe doors every now and then, as though he'd rather have company.
Or even the Oooohs and Aaaahs that come from a fashionable set of friends exchanging notes and catching up over coffee - just like these two.

I happened to be sitting a table away from them at the coffee shop, they were loud, and everything from the conversation to the clothes seemed as though they were out to have fun that day. They even rocked the same rings! Now that's a kind of friendship we love to flaunt too!

I have a fixation... for all things essentially girly! (No, that doesn't mean that my favourite colour is pink! Come on!) and all things tom-boyish! Did I hear you say that's two sides of a pole? Let me explain.

You see for most part of the days when I was a teen, my time was spent reading books, watching 'Wonder years', playing basketball, and finding ways to deal with my braces. I was always found in shorts, and t-shirts, and was always the boy of the house!

Needless to say, when this late bloomer took to wearing things that most girls do, the first instinct was to bring down the 'girlyness' (is that even a word?), of the outfit, by adding something edgy. I work with that principle even now, and love the unexpected clash between the soft, flowy, and lady-like worn with the dark, clean-cut, and tomboyish.

This nude sweater with pearl embellishment for example, was perfect for wearing with a tutu-like skirt, and pretty shoes. But my sartorial sixth sense, told me to add a biker jacket, and some tall boots instead - I wish I had knee high ones!!

Smokey kohled eyes, did the trick, and turned an innocent little duckling into the bad-ass Black Swan.

Ready to hit the town now.

Frebruary has slowly but surely crept up on us, and before you're ready, it'll be Valentine's Day! Everything around you will be glittery, red, pink, dainty, fluffly and full of the effervescence of love-dovey sweet nothings.

Here's to bringing on the love movement full force!

And as you can see...I'm on some serious look out for V-day inspiration since I have no clue what to buy my honey!

Last year, I missed out on buying myself a cape. I also didn't end up liking any of the ones I saw earlier this winter. However, as luck would have it.... I found this beautiful one, and on sale too! Aah! such joy...

I pulled it over a sheer blouse, in a summery peppermint colour that has some gorgeous detailing around the neck. Paired that with my lightest blue - slightly torn - jeans, to add just the right amount of pastel colour like I did here. And just so you might not think I was sitting in 'Springtime'! I wore boots! Well almost. I slipped into these warm suede booties that are every bit as comfy as they are fashionable.

The red bag, and peekaboo socks added a shock of colour to my otherwise pale outfit. And I spent all evening feeling like super-girl - (cape and boots and all) - ready to reach out for the sky, and fly!

Leather weather

We went out with friends for dinner at the Golf Club on Monday. So for an outfit that went from day-time running around to evening fun, here's what I picked out. This kind of outfit has become my favourite for the Delhi chill. It's the kind of thing that allows you to have fun with wintery layers, without the fuss of looking sloppy. A winter skirt, a tartan shirt, and a warm jacket - the winter recipe for this gal! Topped ofcourse, with a fiery pout, and a bright bag.

I bought this leather skirt on sale last year, and we've become very good friends since. And while a leather skirt may otherwise be a preferred option for a more dressed up occasion, I just enjoy wearing it, in an everyday kind of way.

The bag, is one of my favourite slingy ones. It's part of the 'Rang Patang' (colourful kites) collection and I got it from a good friend who designs the label All things bright and beautiful*. This particular piece is called 'Lad Patang' (fighting kite), and my penchant for fun names (as mentioned here) got the better of me again!

This past week has been over the top for me. For one I've been a bit under the weather - Delhi's done record lows in winter temperatures! I've been trying to tackle an all new project that involves a lot of travelling between Delhi's suburbs... And my husband's brother (who's like a brother to me) is getting married next weekend!
In the middle of the madness, here are a couple of things keeping me calm.

Bought this jacket only last week at OLayla, in Haus Khas village, and I was itching to wear it over the weekend. It's a kitschy little boutique and everything they stock, is made from ethically sourced village hand-crafts, and recycled waste materials.

I wore my newly acquired piece out and about town to run some errands, and then catch up with my parents over green tea. You can imagine my happiness when my mum looked over at my attire approvingly (Haha! Touche!). The jacket itself, has been re-crafted out of an old traditional handloom saree. It's slightly quilted, and lined with fleece on the inside, so you can keep snug while looking a million bucks!

I teamed up this otherwise formal/ Indian wear looking piece with the classics - a white button down, and blue denims. But I wanted to make sure it wasn't all boring under the jacket. So I threw on this bib necklace I'd bought at (here goes another quirky name) A Few of My Favourite Things by Puja Sharma. And as you can see that bag and I are now inseparable.

This year's love

There's a tradition amongst some of my friends to get together at the beginning of the new year. This makes sure we're by each other's side through the rest of the year as well. While some of us couldn't make it, Push and I decided to keep the tradition alive.

To celebrate the love of friendship, I wore this quirky little pull-over. It's neckline is so dainty, and the print is totally cartoony! And I bought these lovely shoes (wing-tipped brogue style ballerinas) at Charles and Keith on sale the same day! So of course I was totally thrilled. The bag, is easily becoming one of my staples since it great for carrying my camera (a.k.a - The Beast), without having to worry about it getting spoilt.

Even though we met later in the first week, it was good fun, just walking around, sipping coffee, and catching up on each others' "Grand Plans" for the year - aside from the shopping of course - sale season has begun ladies!!

T'was the eve of christmas! Aha!......When the leopard met the bunny.

You know how when we were kids, and our mom used to dress us up in funny winter sweaters. Well christmas time is always about silly sweaters for me, and weird photos from the winter vacations, when the entire family used to get together. Now, looking back there's a pile of pullovers, that remind of my grandmother's kntting, and the funny things we used to get up to as kids.

So this weekend when we headed to a christmas barbeque, I chose to sass up my animal print, with a coochy-moochy sweater (Tradition in the making!). Just right for an evening of catching up with friends. The whole thing was so perfectly silly, and such a laugh. Christmas time couldn't have been made better.

The official celebrations for the run-up to New years' eve have finally started. Obviously, I didn't waste any time, to bring out the party clothes! I spoke to you the last time around about wearing sequined clothes and accessories - well here's my way to do it! I wore this outfit, to a slightly formal dinner which was a 50th birthday party for my aunt.

I paired my sequin top with a flared black high-waisted skirt that creates the illusion of a thinner waistline. To do away with the monotony of the dark colours, I topped it off with a bright belt in faux snake leather that had tones of blue and pink and a fuschia jacket, that I found for a steal at the Sarojini Nagar flea market

To finish it up - my glittery box bag, and a high bun that's fuss-free.
Lets. Get. The. Party. Started.

Lately everything I end up buying is something that shines, glitters, and sparkles!
With the new year celebrations in full swing - a glittery dress is a party-must have that no one wants to miss. Sequins of various shapes, and sizes, in traditional mettalic shades as well as bolder off-beat ones are all the rage!
But let me warn you... they're not for the faint of heart. When you've worn your 'brilliant' piece (no matter if its a bag or a whole dress) you can be sure its going to catch everyone's attention! So, when choosing a piece you must be entirely sure of how much bling you want to bring.

For a casual evening out/ movie, pair a sequinned skirt or shorts with a somewhat sombre lace blouse, or printed shirt, or a quirky crop top (to show off how much those crunches work!). For a scandalous night out rock a sequinned mini-dress with a leather jacket, and sky-high booties! And for lady-like glamour, opt for a floor sweeping gown, so that you're bathed from head to toe!

Don't forget 'barely there' make-up, and minimal accessories. And you're all set to bedazzle!

I've been so excited off late about doing an outfit post after so long! So when the Delhi winter finally came into its own, day before yesterday, I just had to put on my gear, and head on out.

You'll find me dreaming ways to pair pastel colours with red these days. Call it a hangover from seeing all the Spring 2012 shows, or just my new obsession. I've realised that while warm gem-like tones maybe a great recipe for beating the chill, the cold pastels are an all new way of embracing it! So when it came to being 'one with the winter', I chose this fresh mint coloured shirt, along with the icy grey trousers (but the material's oh so warm).

Unfortunately (or not) I hadn't unpacked my winter jackets yet, since the weather wasn't chilly enough so far. But that wasn't going to get me down! I seized the day, as well as a jacket from my husband's wardrobe, and went on about my business. A coral coloured pout, hints of red on this DIY necklace and my jeweled red shoes brightened up the entire outfit in christmassy cheer!

PS: can you still see hints of bridal mehndi (henna) on my feet?!

Juliet told Romeo that a name is an artificial and meaningless convention. She loves the person that he is, and the name he bears through his family means nothing to her. With me though, the love story works differently.

I have a strange kind of love affair with the names of things. And my advertising job was responsible in part for cementing this love.

You can imagine the situation has got pretty bad when something like this happens....
I see a particular kind of red lipstick (a great colour - I tell myself), the name instantly does me in. Like a child buying candy, I open my wallet in a jiffy, and exchange a couple of currency notes for the most appealing name on the lipstick list!

I justify this purchase in my head - It's not that the red, or pink or peach would become any better colours... But its just that name! - and this makes the indulgence just a wee bit sweeter.

I return home with my sweet prize, and try it on, only to realise I've ended up with duplicates!

All the colours for fall, packed up in one basket.

You know that feeling when someone tells you they have good news and bad.... well that's what this past week has been. So i'll get the bad news out of the way first.
As we get closer to the wedding (there's only a week left), there are some things that we're getting sorted, and seeing falling into place. Others...well... they seem to have a mind of their own, and they're turning up the heat for us - quite literally! We recently found out about a fire (!!!) at the hotel for our post-wedding 'vacation'. This was most unfortunate and very unsettling, but we're hoping to get a good place as alternative accommodation.
On a happier note meanwhile, our wedding invites have arrived (and the first lot dispatched/ delivered). The week ended with a great Diwali - god, love and celebration.
What else is there to ask for!

A small expedition took me to the market yesterday, and i was tempted by a street hawker selling these paper wind fans. They were so colourful I couldn't help myself. For me these paper fans are representative of the festive season. It just comes in like a whirlwind at this time of the year, and a sort of mayhem hits the streets.
Markets are swamped with people who are out buying gifts and presents to exchange with each other over Diwali. All kinds of paraphernalia for the upcoming wedding season suddenly makes itself available.
Traffic jams, blocked roads, and streets packed with shoppers, spicy street food stalls, and hawkers screaming their wares - the Indian 'bazaars' have come alive, and in true form!

Marlene Dietrich is known for re-inventing herself throughout her career - first on stage, then on screen as one of the most glamourous actresses of her time, and later as war frontline entertainer (during World War II) and cabaret performer.
She is popularly known for her love of men's inspired clothing - tuxedos with tail-coats, and top hats in particular. Wether wearing trousers, or furs and long billowy dresses, her photos exude a sense of power, that comes from knowing the effect that one can have on the beholder.

I wore this to a fitting for one of my wedding outfits. These pants are my favourite, and you'll see me wearing them all the time. Since the material is linen I wanted to ensure that they didn't make my big Punjabi back side look bigger... so I got them tailored to get the perfect fit, and boy! did I! Now I practically live in them.

The monotones of the outfit were brightened by my brand new bag.

And oh! the finishing touch - my shoes.. these babies I got at Bata. Yes! Bata, you know that place where mom used to take us for our school shoes! They're bang on trend with the tassels, and the 'slightly' pointed shape, quite a steal too!

The day ended with some quality time along with my sis, and a little walk in the park.

I've been in the midst of finalising a bunch of minutae for the wedding these past two weeks. Also had a great surprise birthday bash, that some of my friends got together and threw for me! (...thank you all...I send you my love and gratitude) Needless to say, with all things birthday comes a whole lot of acquiring of new things :)

100 years of style

My mother has always asked me to hold on to clothes that were in good condition, but out of fashion. "Fashion always comes back", she says and I remember wearing so many clothes from her younger days, that she had put aside to be passed on. Its quite something to have something handed down from your mother or grandmother, and know that its totally the 'it' thing to own.
I stumbled upon this video the other day, and aside from showcasing how trends have come and gone and come back again, there are just so many things that I liked about it.

The execution specifically in terms of the music, as well as the dance routines. I found that some of the key moves in the dance routine also changed according to popular moves from the time represented.

You'll see as you go along that androgyny has been common to women's style for decades now...so its nothing new... women's fascination and use of men's clothing is kind of ingrained in their genes then.

The styling of-course is impeccable with each look being distinctly different from the other, yet the transition from one to the other is not jarring. Instead its a seamless documentation of how fashion has evolved over generations.

The week that was..

I mentioned in this post that the monsoon was coming to an end...well apparently i stand corrected. Between the rains, and wedding preparations I've had no time for outfits and/or newer posts on the blog this week. It rained like cats and dogs earlier this week, and that forced me to stay indoors mostly. The gloomy weather however didn't keep us from charging on with wedding prep, and the little loose ends that needed tying up.
Meanwhile, here are a few good things that kept my spirits up in the grey weather.

A couple weeks ago, my best friend Push and I bought the same necklace at the mall. We tend to do that.. we end up buying the same thing together, every once in a while... I think its one of those things in life that you'd do with your BFF :)

We met this weekend again for a double date to watch 'Friends with benefits' (aha!) and.....yup....you guessed it.. we both ended up wearing the same necklace!

At first sight both our boyfriends couldn't understand whether we'd actually planned for this to happen. Turns out we were both looking forward to showing the other how each of us was going to wear our newest buy. What I found most interesting about this little co-incidence, was that we both wore it in our own fun way! Push chose to wear hers with a classic bright green shift dress , while I went more boho with mine. No bag in the photos, cause I wasn't in the mood for one.

As the monsoon fades out, I can't help but feel excited about the winter, and why not. Luxe is at its best in winter which is preceded by the big fat wedding season.. and the winter chill can never get the better of Delhi's extravagance.

It’s a rich fall season this year where warm jewel tones set the mood on the runways.
However, it's the brightness of wine-like burgundy, dark rose, claret and bordeaux that are turning up the heat for me. I'm dreaming Ralph Lauren's specially gorgeous number..

Deep and classic, this palette spells mystery, allure, and womanhood in all its glory. Wear it with élan in the form of a floor sweeping dress a-la Ralph Lauren, or to add more power to your office wear with a bold pair of wide-legged trousers. Or simply smear it on your lips along with some bronzer to glam up a cold winter afternoon - you know... indulge in the richness and romance this winter.

Camel

I couldn't help myself, I just had to share this with you.

I turned an old key chain into an interesting necklace. This camel key-ring belonged to my sister, and she bought it at some roadside shop. I fell in love with it when I came across it, and already had images of how I'd wear it. I really like that its not just a lone camel, but also the details on the 'Sheikh'. You can almost see a smile on his face.

This Saturday was a good one.

The fiancé and I took my mother out to lunch, at Theo’s - a great Italian place in Noida. Its lovely to eat there, cause it’s a cosy place, where the service is great, and the food is always cooked fresh. The day got off to a slow start and there was much to achieve. We went out to get a bed for our new room. (we've been working on re-furnishing our part of the house for almost three months now)

The day was hot and sticky, and we were going to a furniture factory - I was in no mood to wear pants or jeans. Eventually I threw on something that was hassle-free, conservative yet feminine.

At first I was a little vary about picking up this dress because of the horizontal stripes, but i guess the ribbon cinch worked to slim the dress up and the long flowing pearl necklace was a good distraction.
